Geotechnical design services overview

Geotechnical design uses soil investigation results to calculate and detail foundations, piles, retaining walls and ground improvement so that structures remain stable throughout their service life. SPN's strength is that the investigation team and the design team work together — no soil data is lost along the way, and designs can be adjusted quickly to actual site conditions.

What is geotechnical design?

Geotechnical engineering design uses data from soil investigation — such as SPT N-Values, lab test results and groundwater level — to calculate and design foundations, piles, retaining walls, soft soil improvement and slope stability, so that structures are safe, economical and do not settle beyond allowable limits throughout their service life.

Geotechnical and Soil Mechanics Design Services — SPN Soil Engineering

SPN Soil Engineering provides end-to-end geotechnical and soil mechanics design by experienced engineers working directly from soil investigation data — from house foundations, retaining walls, soft soil improvement and slope stability analysis with Slope/W and PLAXIS to assessment and remedial design of foundations on site. Every design is certified by a COE-licensed engineer and usable for building-permit submissions and other relevant agencies.

Full technical details — calculation methods, standards and scope

1. Foundation and Pile Design (Foundation Design)

We design the foundation best suited to the soil conditions, loads and project budget, using SPT N-Value and lab test data from the soil investigation.

  • Shallow Foundation Design — spread and combined footingsDesign of Spread Footings, Combined Footings and Mat Foundations for sites where the soil has sufficient bearing capacity. Bearing Capacity is calculated per Terzaghi, Meyerhof and Hansen, and Settlement is checked against acceptable limits.
  • Pile Foundation Design — driven piles, bored piles, micropilesSelection of the most economical pile type (Driven Precast, Bored Pile, Micro Pile, Barrette), size and depth using actual SPT N-Value data. Ultimate Pile Capacity is calculated with the Static Formula and verified by PDA or Static Load Test.
  • Pile Capacity Analysis — load capacity analysisAnalysis of single pile capacity and Group Effect, calculation of Negative Skin Friction in areas of ground settlement, and design of Pile Caps and Rafts for uniform load distribution.
  • Settlement Analysis — settlement analysisCalculation of Immediate Settlement, Primary Consolidation Settlement and Secondary Compression using Cc, Cv and the Secondary Compression Index (Cα) from the Consolidation Test, predicting settlement time and final settlement magnitude.
  • Lateral & Uplift Pile — uplift and lateral pilesPile design for solar farms, high-voltage transmission towers, sign poles and wind-loaded structures. Uplift capacity is calculated from skin friction, and lateral capacity by the Broms method or p-y curves, checking pile-head displacement, bending moment and tension reinforcement, with a proposed Uplift Test and Lateral Load Test plan.
  • Machine Foundation — machine foundationsFoundation design for rotating machinery such as pumps, compressors and generators, and for impact machinery, following ACI 351.3R. The natural frequency of the foundation-soil system is analyzed to stay clear of the operating frequency, vibration amplitude is checked against manufacturer criteria, and the machine foundation is isolated from the building floor to reduce vibration transmission.

2. Retaining Wall and Earth Structure Design (Retaining Structure Design)

Design of all types of earth-pressure-resisting structures for temporary and permanent excavations in urban and confined sites — read more: Which retaining wall to choose? 7 types compared and Retaining walls under the Ministerial Regulation B.E. 2566 (2023): the 3 FS checks to pass

  • Sheet Pile and Soldier Pile DesignDesign of steel Sheet Piles (U-type, Z-type) and Soldier Piles (H-Pile + Lagging) for temporary and permanent excavations. Earth Pressure is calculated per Rankine and Coulomb, with Anchor and Strut systems designed alongside.
  • Diaphragm Wall DesignDesign of reinforced concrete walls cast in a trench (Slurry Wall) for very deep urban excavations — high stiffness, good watertightness and low deformation — analyzed by FEM (PLAXIS) with checks of impact on adjacent buildings.

  • Slab-on-Grade — ground-supported slabs and warehouse floorsDesign of factory and warehouse floors for Selective Racks, forklifts and distributed loads following ACI 360R, using the Modulus of Subgrade Reaction (k) from a Plate Bearing Test and analyzing settlement of fill and soft soil to decide between a slab-on-grade and a pile-supported slab.

4. Foundation Assessment, Remediation and Consulting (Assessment & Consulting)

Frequently asked questions — geotechnical design

A Boring Log with SPT N-Value for every soil layer, lab test results such as Atterberg Limits, Consolidation Test, Triaxial or Direct Shear, and the groundwater level. SPN can provide soil investigation alongside design in the same project.

It is the stability analysis of slopes and embankments, calculating the Factor of Safety (FS) with Slope/W or PLAXIS. FS ≥ 1.5 is considered safe for permanent slopes. It should be done before building embankments, roads on soft soil, cut slopes and all deep excavations.

PVD (Prefabricated Vertical Drain) is a vertical drainage strip installed into soft soil with a steel mandrel, combined with a temporary surcharge fill, to accelerate soil consolidation — cutting the waiting time from several years to 3–12 months. It suits roads, airports and projects on soft soil in Central Thailand.

Steel sheet piles are used for temporary or permanent excavations, install quickly and cost less, but water may leak through the interlocks. A diaphragm wall is a concrete wall cast in a trench — stiff, more watertight and with less deformation, suited to very deep urban excavations.

Commonly used criteria: FS ≥ 1.5 for permanent slopes in the long-term (drained) condition and FS ≈ 1.2–1.3 for temporary slopes or during construction (short-term, undrained). Rapid drawdown and seismic cases use specific criteria from the referenced standard. The value actually used depends on the importance of the structure, the risk and the project requirements.

Design based on actual soil data selects the most suitable pile, sets the correct depth and spacing, avoids overly conservative design, and prevents later settlement problems whose repair costs are often many times the design fee.

Yes. Design reports and construction drawings are certified by a COE-licensed civil engineer and can be submitted to the Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO), the municipality, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and other relevant agencies.

A typical house takes 3–7 working days after complete soil data is received, a commercial building 1–2 weeks, and an industrial factory 2–4 weeks. SPN can run soil investigation and design in parallel to shorten the overall schedule.

Besides compression, uplift from wind and lateral load with moment at the pile head must be checked using the Broms method or p-y curves from actual soil data, along with tension reinforcement, and should be verified by Uplift and Lateral Load Tests in the field. Read more: Uplift Test · Lateral Load Test

The engineer must first calculate the additional moment from eccentricity and the actual remaining pile capacity, then choose a fix such as enlarging the footing, adding piles or adding tie beams. SPN provides assessment and remedial design with calculation sheets. Read more: Off-center piles · Piles shorter than design

The earth-retaining system (e.g. sheet pile, contiguous pile wall or diaphragm wall), the bracing system and the dewatering system must be designed, basal heave checked and settlement of adjacent buildings assessed, with an instrumentation plan such as inclinometers and settlement points during construction. Read more: Deep excavation monitoring

Foundation and earth-retaining design requires soil data from the actual site. If none exists, SPN plans the number and depth of boreholes to suit the design, then carries out the investigation and design back-to-back in the same project — shortening the overall schedule with no need to coordinate multiple contractors.
